Lord Dattatreya was the son of Atri Maharshi and Anasuya. According to the legends, the injustice and monstrosity of demonic forces increased to such a level that Dattatreya had to incarnate in different forms to destroy the demons. This year the festival of Dattajayanti will be celebrated on 5th December when you will witness many followers heading to the temple to offer their prayers and seek the lord’s blessing.
The pooja that is performed on the Dattajayanti is started after cleaning the house and preparing Prasad. Once the worship of Lord Datta is done the Prasad is distributed to everyone. It is said that if a person worship lord Datta with full devotion, purity of mind and soul; Lord Datta resolves all the problems and blesses with happiness. On the day Dattajayanti, it is believed that the lord Datta principle is 1000 times more active on earth as compared to other times. One gets maximum benefits of the Datta principle.
Lord Dattatreya, a supreme yogi, remained an Avadutha throughout his life, i.e. a sage who remains in pure nature throughout the lifetime. The introduction of the Avadhuta Gita came from Dattatreya. He narrated the secrets of Vedanta to Lord Subrahmanya and this teaching or narration later came to be called as the Avadhuta Gita.
As per the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Dattatreya got knowledge from 24 different masters and the Datta community originated because of him. In southern India, you will find many temples dedicated to him and a large number of devotees offering prayers. Witness the glory of this day this year. Devotees completely submerge themselves in praying and chanting the sight of which is truly mesmerizing.
